Video Poker Odds Calculator
Estimate the chance a draw completes — from outs, deck size, and cards drawn.
Models the chance of drawing at least one listed out. It does not weigh payout, so it is not an EV decision on its own.
This measures the chance of hitting at least one out. It does not decide whether the hold is correct by EV.
| Scenario | Outs | Draw | Hit | Miss | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 to a Royal Flush | 1 | 1 | 2.13% | 97.87% | Rare hit, but the payout is so large the draw can still be worth a lot. |
| 4 to a Flush | 9 | 1 | 19.15% | 80.85% | More frequent than a royal draw, with a far smaller payout. |
| 4 to an Outside Straight | 8 | 1 | 17.02% | 82.98% | Open-ended draws have twice the direct outs of inside straights. |
| 4 to an Inside Straight | 4 | 1 | 8.51% | 91.49% | Much weaker unless other value is present. |
| Pair improving to Trips | 2 | 3 | 12.49% | 87.51% | Holding one pair and drawing three, two cards of that rank can make trips. |
| Two Pair improving to Full House | 4 | 1 | 8.51% | 91.49% | Holding two pair, four cards pair the kicker into a full house. |
A simple outs count can understate value when a hold has several improvement types. For exact decisions, compare expected value across all holds. For a practical Jacks or Better example of how improvement odds affect real decisions, see the trips-to-win reference.
How Draw Odds Work
Draw odds are based on the unseen cards left after the deal. Hold four cards and draw one, and the remaining deck is 47 cards. If one card completes your target, the direct hit chance is 1 in 47, about 2.13%.
When you draw more than one card, the math uses combinations, not simple division. Hold a pair and draw three, and you do not multiply one-card odds by three. The correct model counts every legal draw combination and checks how many contain at least one useful card.
Hit ≥ one out = 1 − C(deck − outs, draw) ÷ C(deck, draw)Outs
Outs are the cards that improve the hand in the way you are measuring. Four to a flush usually has nine outs — thirteen cards in a suit, minus the four already in hand.
Cards drawn
The number drawn changes the model. Drawing one card from 47 is direct; drawing two to five needs combination math because replacement order does not matter.
Probability versus payout
A likely result is not automatically profitable, and a rare result can be valuable if the payout is large. That is why strategy needs expected value, not just hit chance.
Strategy context
The same odds can point to a different play under a different paytable. A flush draw is worth more when the flush pays 6 than 5, even though the chance of completing it is unchanged.
Odds vs RTP
These answer different questions. Odds ask "how likely is this result?" RTP asks "how much does the game return on average after payouts and strategy?" You can know the exact chance of a flush and still choose wrong if the payout and the alternative holds are ignored.
| Metric | Question it answers | Uses probability? | Uses paytable? | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Odds | How likely is a target result? | Yes | No, not alone | Draw frequency and rarity. |
| Expected Value | Which hold is worth more on average? | Yes | Yes | Choosing the best hold for one hand. |
| RTP | What does the game return long term? | Yes | Yes | Comparing games and paytables. |
| Variance | How large can the swings be? | Yes | Yes | Bankroll pressure and volatility. |
The distinction matters in Jacks or Better. Four to a royal hits rarely but the royal payout is huge; a high pair improves more often but its ceiling is lower. The best decision comes from comparing the full expected return of each hold.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are video poker odds?
They describe the probability of a result — completing a flush, straight, full house, or royal draw — based on the unseen cards and how many you draw.
What are outs?
Outs are the cards that complete or improve a hand in the way being measured. Hold four to a flush and the remaining cards of that suit are the flush outs.
Are odds the same as RTP?
No. Odds measure probability; RTP measures long-run return after payouts and strategy. A result can be unlikely but still valuable when the payout is high.
What is the chance of a royal from four royal cards?
Hold four to a royal and draw one from a 47-card deck — one exact card completes it, so the direct hit chance is 1 in 47, about 2.13%.
Should I keep the hold with the most outs?
Not always. The most outs can still mean lower expected value if the payout is small or another hold returns more on average. Use odds for probability and an EV calculator for the decision.
Use Odds as Input, Not the Final Decision
Odds show how often a draw can succeed, but they are incomplete without payouts. The strongest workflow is to count the outs, check the paytable, and then compare the expected value of each possible hold.
